It often involves accepting materially less than what one truly desires/needs from a romantic partnership, leading to feelings of dissatisfaction and emotional disconnect.

It made me think about other ways taxpayers subsidize corporations. Like with mass lay-offs in which countless thousands of employees are laid of to cut costs and maximize company profit margins which can lead to those employees needing SNAP and other benefits to survive. 

Layoffs shift economic burdens to the public. Tax payers fund unemployment benefits and public assistance. On top of loosing payroll and business tax revenue. It means that we the people subsidize corporate profitability and individual wealth accumulation. 

I remember when companies once at least pretended to include customers, employees, and sometimes the even physical regional communities  where their offices are housed as key stakeholders they were accountable to in their operations. Now so many large corporations are seemingly only accountable to their top 1% of shareholders. 

Anyway, policy matters. The big picture matters. So many things, like needed food assistance, aren’t individual failings but systematic levers of harm and manipulation to benefit the few on the backs of the many.
