Captain Marvel has now hit the $1 Billion box office mark, congrats to them! I just saw Captain Marvel this weekend. I missed the press showing and had to see it with the regular humans (flips hair). Here are a few thoughts:
- I think that it was just okay.
- Brie Larson is an incredible actress, nuanced and talented; I think she was a great choice.
- Lashana Lynch was a huge distraction because her melanin is as exquisite as her acting, that woman should stay booked and busy and I hate Hollywood for her underwhelming level of booked. I also feel conflicted about the “black woman side-kick who helps that white lead remember why she is awesome and important” component of her role. But at least Lashana had many lines even though she is still minor in the overall Marvel Universe.
- This movie is too late. We are nearing the end of this iteration of the Marvel Universe. They really should have started with Captain Marvel but sexism is a hell of a Hollywood drug.
- The political and social commentary was too on the nose. But I am guessing most of the viewers needed it to be basic to correlate it to the world and their own bias.
- The first half of the movie was slow but it gets better, this was the literal review my 9 year old daughter gave me because she saw it with my husband first.
- The jokes often just missed the mark. The comedy was not Thor: Ragnarok level but when they tried, I often felt like saying: “ba dum bump” or was the one of the few folks laughing (because I really did need a laugh that day).
In the end, I felt the movie was neither bad nor extraordinary, but I liked it nonetheless, so watch it!
I have note that I have extreme superhero fatigue, Hollywood is a basic b*tch that will literally continue to beat a decomposing horse to a parallel universe before they innovate. I am done with comic book movies, and I was a comic book nerd, so that is saying much. I am ready for original stories in the science fiction and fantasy realm.
